JBS in midst of historic postseason

It’s been a historic season for Jesuit Basketball teams. Exactly half of the 40 Jesuit men’s and women’s Division I basketball programs (12 men’s, 8 women’s) qualified for some type of postseason tournament.

But the real story has been what Jesuit schools have been able to do in the crown jewel of March Madness: The NCAA men’s tournament. This year’s performance ranks the 2011-12 season among the most successful ever.

Eight Jesuit teams made the Big Dance, an eighth of the field and the most ever in a single tournament. Since the tournament expanded to 64 teams in 1985, only two iterations have featured seven Jesuit teams (2001 and 2007), while four other tournaments have featured six (1995, 1997, 2002, 2003). The six Jesuit teams that advanced from the first round is also the largest total in a single tournament.

Through the first weekend, Jesuit teams have claimed eight wins in NCAA tournament play. That ties the 2012 tournament for the second-most in history with the 1982 and 2004 tourneys. Two more wins from the two remaining teams (Xavier and Marquette) would tie the record set in 1955 when Jesuit teams won 10 games in the tournament, powered by five victories for national champion San Francisco.

The eight JBS teams in the tournament this year brings the number of Big Dance berths over the last 12 seasons to 64. That’s more than the number of tournament appearances by teams from the Southeastern Conference (62), Atlantic Coast Conference (62) and Pac 10/12 (53).

Women’s Weekly Honor Roll, Feb. 27-March 11

Here are the final weekly award winners for Jesuit Women’s Basketball for the tournament weeks of 2/27/12 to 3/11/12.

Three JBS teams are in the women’s NCAA Tournament. There are also three JBS squads in the WNIT, two in the WBI tourney and one in the NAIA National Tournament. That makes 9 of the 28 JBS women’s teams in postseason play. All postseason games will be mentioned on the JBS Facebook and Twitter pages.

All-Jesuit and Academic All-Jesuit teams will be announced in the next few weeks.
